‘The Girl in the Fireplace’: A Rant

So, I just finished ‘The Girl in the Fireplace’ and it still bothers me. Actually, it bothers me even more because, I hadn’t realized that the first time they met she was seven years old, and the second time they met — when she was most likely still a teenager — is when she kissed him. I thought they kissed when she was older, and after they had met several times before. I think I am most upset that the Doctor not only enjoyed the kiss, but he bragged about kissing the future Madame De Pompadour, like she wasn’t just a seven year-old less than five minutes ago. If this episode didn’t have that underlying creep factor with the Doctor happily kissing a teenage girl he first met and last saw when she was prepubescent, a minute ago, it would be a really good episode.

“The impossible girl, a mystery wrapped in an enigma squeezed into a skirt that’s just a little bit too tight,” the Doctor, Nightmare In Silver. 

Am I the only one that found this line really uncomfortable? I’m not a prude, I’ve been a fan of Doctor Who for most of my life and I’ve never been bothered about the romantic stuff that’s a bit more prevalent in modern Doctor Who. I’ve never felt the Doctor was above falling in love. There’s nothing quite like love in the universe but that’s not a statement of love or respect. It’s a line that’s not far removed from “she was asking for it” and is more likely to be find in a modern guide to rape excuses than a family show. It just felt like a really unnecessary comment and it’s still making my skin crawl a few days later.

I was so bothered by this line. I am still bothered. I don’t know if this was Gaiman’s doing or not — my guess would be not — but I’d like to think he would be above reducing Clara — brave, smart, resourceful Clara — to a sexual object. That it was not some other male character, but the Doctor himself who said it, makes it ten times worse. When Cyber-Doctor was flirting with Clara to make her drop her guard, there was a clear distinction that this was not the Doctor himself, but the Cybermites in his head using his body to do it’s bidding. But when he said that about her skirt, that was him. His reaction to imagining her after having said it, makes it all the worse.

Ugh… I am disgusted all over again.

This will be a rambling mess of a rant type thing about ‘The Name of the Doctor.’ Beware profanity. Also, SPOILERS!

I read this as, he’s been a complete asshole for ignoring her for some indefinite amount of time; letting her believe that she is invisible to him. He’d spare his own feelings by constantly and actively pretending he doesn’t see her or hear her, with no regard to how that hurts her. That’s selfish and that is not love. Their so-called love story has always been one sided and even if Moffat throws in these tender moments to reaffirm their relationship, the entire thing feels contrived.

I have to say, Charlotte was one of the most surprising things about this film. They could have made her annoying but instead make her a very funny character. They could have made her a spoiled brat, but while she is a bit spoiled, instead they made her a very caring friend and pretty much a sister to Tiana. They could have made her a bland character just someone for Naveen to have to marry, but instead they gave her an actual personality and made her likable. Finally, this scene.

Even though it’s obvious that to Charlotte, finding true love is her dream, her ‘restaurant’, she is more than willing to give it up for her friend. She doesn’t even take a few moments to think it over. Her and Tiana have such a strong friendship, she would rather let her friend - who has found true love, not just a simple crush or anything like that - live happily ever after herself than marry a prince. And afterwards, she stays positive about it, not only because her best friend is happy, but she’s knows she’ll find her prince someday too, she just has to wait a little longer, and that’s perfectly fine with her.

Probably one of the best side characters and role models in the Disney canon.

For all the changes and stuff that production had to go through, Charlotte has to be the best thing to come out of it.
